OTOGENIC TENSION PNEUMOCEPHALUS CAUSED BY THERAPEUTIC LUMBAR CSF DRAINAGE FOR POST-TRAUMATIC HYDROCEPHALUS: A CASE REPORT Otogenic tension pneumocephalus caused by therapeutic lumbar CSF drainage for post-traumatic hydrocephalus: A case report

چکیده
Tension pneumocephalus occurs when a continuous flow of air accumulates in the intracranial cavity and produces a mass effect on the brain. We describe a case in which tension pneumocephalus was caused by the performance of continuous lumbar CSF drainage in a middle-aged man who had experienced a temporal bone fracture. Continuous lumbar CSF drainage is commonly performed in patients with temporal bone or basilar skull fractures to treat concomitant post-traumatic CSF rhinorrhea, CSF otorrhea, and/or hydrocephalus. However, to the best of our knowledge, there has been no previously reported case of tension pneumocephalus occurring as a complication of this procedure in a patient with a temporal

Communicating Hydrocephalus Onset Following a Traumatic Tension Pneumocephalus
The entrapment of intracranial air from the check valve system results in a tension pneumocephalus. It should be distinguished from simple pneumocephalus because they are intracranial space-occupying masses that can threaten life. Communicating hydrocephalus is a serious and frequent complication of post-traumatic head injury. Head injury is one of the most common causes in etiopathogenesis of ...
متن کاملReport of Two Cases Intracerebral Tension Pneumocephalus
Intracerebral tension pneumocephalus is a rare disorder. Only five cases of them have been reported since 1985. We report two cases of intracerebral tension pneumocephalus with traumatic rhinorrhea. In the first case, intracerebral tension pneumocephalus was induced by lumbar puncture performed two months after trauma. In the second case, intracerebral tension pneumocephalus was observed on com...

BACKGROUND Pneumocephalus is commonly encountered after neurosurgical procedures but can also be caused by craniofacial trauma and tumors of the skull base and rarely, can occur spontaneously. Contributing factors for the development of pneumocephalus include head position, duration of surgery, nitrous oxide (N(2)O) anesthesia, hydrocephalus, intraoperative osmotherapy, hyperventilation, spinal...
متن کاملCase Report: A case report of dry tap during ventriculostomy
Pneumocephalus following ventriculoperitoneal (VP) shunt insertion is an exceptionally rare occurrence. We report such an event after attempting ventricular puncture (ventriculostomy) for VP shunt insertion and then discuss the management of the same. Dry tap can lead to multiple attempts for ventriculostomy with the associated added risks of complications, as well as complicating the subsequen...
